During the visit of the Hon C. J. Parr to Greymoutli the question of unregistered maternity nurses at Greymouth was discussed. It was stated that there were four unregistered nurses practising. They were taking in more than one case at a time, and thus affecting the patronage of Kewa Maternity Home. Mr Parr stated that such ft state of affairs could not lie allowed to continue. The high New Zealand maternity death-rate induced a commission to inquire into the matto.r, and it came to the conclusion that many deaths were a result of the defective conditions in private nursing homes. It was the Department s duty to stop that. They must have hospitals with the, best of surgical and other conditions; that was one of the principal ways by which the death-rate n maternity cases could he reduced. The State provided homes, trained midwives, under the best conditions, and such homes should he patronised. They must see that “the right house got the custom,” and the Board’s representations would he attended to.
