PROSPECTS OK SUGAR INDUSTRY BRISBANE, May 30. Mr Hughes, speaking at Cairns dealt with the national aspect of the sugar industry in relation to tlio White Australia policy. PRISONER ESCAPES. DUNEDIN. May 30
Mervyn John Ctulh.v, a prisoner, while being escorted in custody with six other prisoners from Wellington to the Borstal Institute, Invercargill, jumped from the window of the express train this evening as tlio train was moving out fiurn Waihola.
The escapee is 1!' years of age, five feet, in height, thick set, of lair complexion with a tull face and is clean shaven. He was sentenced to n torm of reformative treatment for breaking entering and llicl't from the premises of W. H. Tisdall. Ltd., Wellington.
