XKW ZEALAND LADIES TEAM.

WELLINGTON, May 24. 'ilie Now Zealand ladies lawn tennis team which wag sent to Australia to play two inter-state matches against Victoria and New South Wales, and which subsequently competed m the Xew South Wales championships, returned by the Ulimaroa from Sydney to-day. The members were:—Misses Macfarlane (captain),. Nancy Curtis, Wellwood and Paton, with Mr Henderson as manager. Miss Eaton was not with the party, haying proceeded direct to Auckland from Sydney. A large number of tennis enthusiasts including Mr M. E. Denniston, chairman of the executive of the association, and Mr D. Murray Kean, secretary, «ave the team an enthusiastic “welcome home.”

Speaking to a Press representative, the manager stated that the members of ~ie team had been very well entertained and looked after by the New South Wales association. After the ‘ championships, they had spent a fortnight in Sydney. All thoroughly enjoyed themselves on the trip. As far as tennis was concerned, they unfortunately had to play a teams match before becoming accustomed to conditions in Australia. They had done well however, and Miss Curtis had won w-hat was practically the ladies’ champiqn* ship of Australia. Miss Macfarlane, as captain, carried out her duties very tactfully. ■

Miss Curtis is .to he given a civic reception at Petone this evening, and the team will be entertained at dinner by the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association to-morrow evening. At the latter function, Mr J. C. Peacock, vice-president, will preside and others present will include gir William Harries (representing the Ministry), and the Mayor of Wellington, Mr 'K. A, Wnght M.P. 1 ■
