It is notified in this issue that the County road staff has been instructed to report the ownership of all stock found at large on the public roads. The Council has resolved that in each instance reported, prosecutions will follow for allowing the stock to remain at large unattended. There are many complaints in regard to the wandering stock nuisance, and the action taken should be a safeguard for all concerned.

Mr P. B. Climie. Organiser of the Canterbury Progress League, wired to the President of the Westland Branch yesterday stating that the lit. Hon. \| r Massey. Prime Minister, would he in ( hristcbnivli on the -Itli pins, and suggesting that a representative deputation of Westland local bodies might cross over to support the Canterbury League in regard to the representations affecting the early inauguration of passenger and mail traffic through the Otira tunnel, as well as in reference to other matters of mutual interest. The County Chairman (Mr Jeffries' was approached and has expressed his intention of joining the deputation. The Borough Council and Westland A. and P. Associaion have been writton to. also, asking their co-operation. The local Progress League will select its representative early next week. No doubt various matters affecting the welfare of the district could he ad\aimed considerably by such a delegation as above proposed.

The death took place at Belfast on Februa.rv 15th under distressing circumstances of Sergt. Eugene Ahern, following wounds received in Springfield Road Barracks by an accidental discharge from a machine gun. A striking testimony of the wide measure of popularity enjoyed by the deceased officer was afforded by the large and representative character of the funeral cortege, which was attended by civilians and members ol the Royal Irish Constabulary from various districts of the city. There was a considerable number of sympathisers along the route and the prevailing feeling was one of unfeigned and widespread sympathy with the widow and orphans of the deceased. The Rev Father Greaven B.A. CO.. St. Paul’s officiated at the residence and graveside. Miss Ahertt and Mr Michael Ahern of Goldsborougll nre sister and brother of the deceased respectively.
