HEAVY-WEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP CHRISTCHURCH, May 22.
The Christchurch Sports Club staged its second professional fight of the season at the King Edward Barracks on i Saturday evening, when Brian MeClea- | rv (Christchurch), holder of the title, | and Albert I’opley (Auckland), challen- | ger. met in a fifteen rounds bout for 1 the I cavy-weight championship .of New Zealand and a purser of £195. Modeary who holds an unbeaten record, recently joined the professional ranks, his first effort being against Whittaker whom he defeated on Easter Saturday. I’onlcy lias been much longer at the game, and as far back as 1910 was amateur champion of New Zealand. II was expected that Dooley’s greater experience would give him victory over his opponent, and great interest was taken in the match, the accommodation at the King Edward Barracks being taxed to its utmost. The weights announced were: McCleary list 81b. I’ooley list Blh, but both men looked pounds heavier. The light was a good willing one from start to finish and wont the full fifteen rounds, the verdict going to McCleary. who outclassed his opponent practically all through. Dooley possesses a powerful punch which he endeavoured to land on numerous occasions, but MeClcnry’s clever footwork and general defence enabled him to keep out of nil trouble. MeClenry repeatedly drove lefts to bis opponent’s face, :,nd was certainly the better eonclitioii(>d of tile |Niir. From the- start both men showed eagerness to fight, and in the first round MeClenry opened proceedings by driving his left to Dooley’s face and narrowly missed a right swing to the libs. I’uoley drove a left to the face and landed a fairly solid right to Modemy's ribs. In the second round Me('learv showed marked superiority, driving his left to the mouth on several occasions his left to the mouth on several occasions. I’ooley was quite content to mix matters, and attempted to upper-cut McC'lea'rv on several occasions, but always the latter’s footwork got him out °f trouble. The third round was opened by the champion's lefts to the face, but these appeared to have little weigh behind them. I’ooley landed a good left to Modoarv's jaw, but the latter retal'ated with a heavy right to the bead, proBabiy the best blow struck up to tdrs stage. Mel'lcary still In-Id a slight advantage in -the fourth ami fifth rounds, a heavy right to Dooley’s eve drauing blood. Dooley appeared to be .sacrificing quite a lot in the hope of getting in a fightfinishing punch and in the fifth round landed left and rigid to the body both punches with ph-ntv if vim behind them.
In tile sixth and seventh rounds Dooley noui'd out promisingly with rights to the body, btq Mt Cleary evened up by sending bis left to his opponent’s damaged eye. .Mode (tv's clusivcnc.-s Mas the feature of these two rounds. 3he "ighth umnil was a vorv merry n(faitand Dooley administer two up|»er-(--ds which plainly hurt.
