The Hokitika Guardian THURSDAY, MAY 18th, 1922 SUCCESS.
It is very pleasing to record the success the winter show at Kokiitalii was <m Tuesday and to congratulate the settlers of Kokatahi and Kottersliigi on the great pleasure afforded the .visitors liv the very fine display made, the exhibition of farm products and home produce was a surprise itt every department to the \isitors, not only for the quantity, but particularly for the quality of the products, and the effective manner in which the whole show was organised. Canterbury farmers who were present were surprised at the quality of the chaff, oats and other farm produce displayed. They averred that the quality of several of the exhibits was equal to the best Canterbury, and wore amazed that in this cli mate such excellent fodder in particular could he saved. But on, weather is not always wet. and we are fortunate in having a generous record of sunshine. At all events the visitors were impressed, and what they saw in the country district the other day, was an object lesson to then) in regard to the pastoral value of the Westland hinds. There is no doubt that the closer iatld settlement which is being si oiteil ucU Vacated will do m ucti to hoin the district forward. The land if properly [ attended to will yield great returns. Even thd local public wo-" surprised at wlmt they sow in the hall oil N\ ednesdav. The i nforinntiun afforded fully justified the settlers in o-ganising tile show. And in that connection we have to remember that it was organ) aid , very hurriedly. There was little more than three weeks in which to preps e. j There can lie no ‘’go sl..w” in the dis- ] t’riet when, in such a limited erne, so fine an effort was rut op.- She hustle] shown s”oaks well for the enterprise of the settlers. The eommittee respon. ! slide for the show must have been wellorganised and well led to place to its record a result which reflects to the credit of all concerned. The Chairman spoke of the show being the first :;h----rtual show. We hope he is correct, and that year by veal* the event will grow and prosper. It is plain that there will lie no lack (if competition, aiid the committee should lie encouraged to go ahead mid begin with as little delay as possible fbr next year's event. These recurring shows help to advertise the district and the value of its land. There is ah unearned increment in ibe value of tiie holdings resultant fioin the successful shows, which will not lie immediately noticeable l , wili make its presence felt at sale time. The Quality of the exhibits was n good advertisement for the quality of the land and the more that is put into the land, the more will be got out of it. The exhibitors are to be congratulated in particular for their great help. Many of them must have been at considerable pains to prepare the fine displays made. In doing so they showed the right sporting spirit. It is the sort of spirit which will do the district good, and if the organisation is maintained as successfully in the future, will carry the district on from success to success to the general good of the whole community.
