It is pleasing to know that the mining enterprise of the people is not dying out. The latest revival is in connection with a sluicing proposition at North Terenmkau, where the Cape Terrace Syndicate is about to undertake, an important work near Greenstone. Mr D. K. Thornton has arrived hero to organise the undertaking. Mr Thornton will he remembered as one of the directors of the Kelly’s Terrace Company a few years ago. The present venture has its main support from Canterbury. hut it is understood that later it will have an English backing.
An unusual ease came before Mr F. "tv. Hunt, S.M., at Wellington. May Aiinett was convicted and ordered to pay costs for having offered a railway ticket for sale. The charge, said Sen-ior-Sergeant Lander, was laid under section 2(i of the Government Railways Act. 1003, and the penalty for the offence was £2O. The woman had come from Auckland on an excursion, and had been persuaded by friends to remain with them until after the time when her ticket expired. She had advertised the ticket, which was a second class return half, for sale in a local paper. This came to tjie notice of the authorities, and she was summoned. She stated that she acted in ignorance of the law.
The Winter School will enter on its fourth day to-morrow. Farmers will hear an interesting lecture on “Pasture grasses” followed by a general lecture on the “scientific principles of siock breeding.” The teacher students tvill hear another of those informative talks by Prof. Shelley oil “the modern tendencies of Education.” In
the afternoon the School visits the Arahura, where Mr Stafford will give a demonstration with cattle, and some field crops will he inspected. At night one of the best lectures of the session will lie given. It will be rendered by Professor Shelley, and the subject is, “Shakespeare in the Theatre.” There will be no charge for admission and patrons will enjoy a treat. If time permits Community singing will be in- | dulged in at the close of the address, which will be one of the principal of the whole series. Owing to Professor Condliffe’s illustrating slides not arriving here, his lecture on medieval England lifts been postponed till Friday night. In nis place-to-night T)r Teichelmann will show his fine series of scenic views, and lecture on the beauties of Westland. The entertainment will be free. Prior to the lecture the visiting members of the Canterbury Progress League will he welcomed.
The residents of Mari 1 lari have been asking that ft constable might he stationed at that southern <- ntre, and it was suggested by the people of Inter-Wanganui district that the officer stationed at Okarito might he moved up to fill the post. The Hon f. G. Coates lias now informed Mr Setldon of the representations made by the Hnri Hari residents, and the request was sent forward to the Minister of Justice who has indicated that it is not considered desirable at present to close the Okarito station, hut when a man can he spared for Hari llari, the question of opening a station there will be considered.
There was a fair attendance at the opening lectures of the Winter School yesterday forenoon. At the Town Hall Mr Belshaw dealt with Economics in Dairying and at St. Andrew’s Hall, Professor,Shelley lectured to the sshool teachers on “Education.” The general lecture at the Town Hall at 11 o clock was on the “Economic Outlook” by Professor Ooudliffe. It was an illuminating review of the world situation in general and that of the Dominion in particular. Much that was said had its political bearing as governing national finance, and the whole address was most instructive. In the afternoon the School paid a visit to the Kokatahi Winter Show where a very instructive lecture on the points of a dairy cow was given by Major Stafford M.H.C.Y.S., and in the evening an address by Professor Shelley. The Winter School is being continued today at the Town Hall, and to-night there will lie an illustrated lecture by Dr Teichelmann on “The Scenery of Westland” given instead of Friday, owing to Prof. Condliffe’s illustrations not having come to hand.
