BRUSSELS, March 8

Forty prosecutions for keeping illicit stills have tome before Brussels magisrates. The accused bad refined wood alcohol or methylated spirits, adding flavours to make this crude alcohol resemble fine liqueurs. The result of imbibin', these mixtures was to produce delirium tremens and alcoholic poisoning. Tb? majority of the accused wer c sentenced to one year’s imprisonment, a. fine of £4OO, and the payment of the Excise dues on the alcohol distilled. Last year 829 illicit stills were discovered in Belgium. They are the result of the prohibition laws that prevent alcohol from being drunk in public places. Stills have been discovered in country schools and all kinds of improbable places. 11l spite of the penalties the number increases daily, causing great loss to the revenue and risk to the health of the people who drink the beverages thus produced.
