In the House of Lords, Lord Carson drew a gloomy picture of chaos in Ireland.

Lord Birkenhead replied. He was informed, he said, that he could not at present speak more definitely than to say that, after preparation, and in the near future the Free State Provisional Government would make an organised and resolute attempt to enforce its authority more closely and more sternly than ever hitherto. The chief cause of grave mischief now going on, he said, was a resolution of the Provisional Government, taken against the strong advice of the British Government, to postpone the Irish elections. Those qualified to form an opinion were convinced the Provisional Government would obtain an overwhelming majority at an election. *
