HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FRIDAY, MAY 12th, The Council met at 7.40 p.tn. Pre* sent— Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), J. Lloyd, J. King, R. F. Perham, F. McGregor, Pilkington and Parkhill.
The minutes were confirmed and out- • ward correspondence approved. inward correspondence. From Hokitika Athletio and Cycling Club asking for permission, to use Cass Square for cycling races on Empire *-*' Day.—Received; and granted on usual conditions.
From J. Chambers and Son, Wellington, thanking Council for particulars of wood pipes supplied.—Received. From S. G. Veale applying to lease quarter acre section of Whitoombe Square and offering £1 10s per annum pins rates.—Received; granted for grazing purposes only, on a yearly tenancy. From Harris and Co., Christchurch making quotation for electric vehicle.— Received; The Mayor said the price £I4OO was prohibitive. “Referred to Messrs Pilkington, Perham and Lloyd to enquire and report.
From Westland Chamber -of Commerce applying for annual contribution to Otira mail service, and asking it be increased by £5 this year.—Received; and agreed to on the motion of Messrs Perham and Parkhill, after Messrs Lloyd and McGregor had objected to tlie increase.
From Same advising that next conference of local bodies will be held at the Town Hall «n May 31st and inviting Council to be represented.—Received and invitatio* accepted. From S a nie asking for use of Town Hall for Conference.—Received and granted. '
From Pahiatua County Council asking Government be asked to assist in providing for antecedent liabilities.— Received. From State Forest service, asking for building statistics.—Received. From J. Myers asking for road approach to his property Park Street.— Received; request granted on usual conditions. From J. F. Martin, Wellington, giving opinion on question of rating on unimproved value for Harbor rates, in Borough of Hokitika and advising that the rate could be levied on the unimproved value.—Received; Mr King moved that a copy be forwarded to- the Harbour Board with the recommendation that the rate be collected on the unimproved values. Seconded by- Mr Lloyd and carried. 'REPORTS. From Treasurer reporting receipts £147 5s 2d; payments £203 Is 6d; credit balance £B4 10s.—Received.
Accounts amounting to £274 9s were passed for payment.
The Mayor reported that the subcommittee had conferred with Dr Bucbanau in connection with the water supply for the Mental Hospital and it had been resolved to defer further consideration for a month to enable a Government engineer to report on the proposals made.—Received- an<l approved. The Reserves Committee reported it was not considered that the trees on • the east side of Cass Square were a danger to the gasometer and before do. ing anything it was proposed to have the highest trees measured.—Received and approved. From Manager of Abattoirs (Mr J. Jarman) reporting there were examined during April—6 cows, 68 bullocks, §46 sheep, 146 lambs 15 pjgs, 7 calves. Condemned nil. Fees for period £67 Is —Received; On the suggestion of Mr King it was resolved to have the wind screen previous agreed to, erected at mice. OVERSKER’S REPORT. I beg to submit the following report on work done during the past Month: Owing to the very wet weather we were unable to do much road work the drains and water tables taking up agood deal of our time. The Bealey Street drain collapsed twice and also Rolleston Street drain, both have been repaired. The pipe drain in Brittan Street at rue crossing of Stafford Street became blocked requiring a portion to be lifted to clean it out. About one week was spent- asphalting and clearing the track on Cass Square and' erecting and taking down platform for Amzac Day Commemoration.
Several of the Streets have been gravelled in places that are beginning to "ear badly, if the weather improves it would be advisable to get them gravelled as soon as possible. before the Winter sets in.
During the month the pipe line between the Reservoir and Coal Creek has been inspected twice and all leaks located uttended to.
About one chain of concrete pipes have been made in the past month. The usual Street cleaning and maintenance work has also been attended to.—Received.
The Mayor moved that the Publjic Works Committee be empowered to obtain the use of the County lorry for carrying gruvel'and that a platform be erected a* the gravel pit to facilitate loading. Seconded by Mr Filkington and carried. The Council rose at 8.30 p.m.'
