Opotiki Protest.

. AT HOSPITAL CHARGES. [by TELEGRAPH—PER PRESS ASSOCIATION , OPOTIKI, May 12. Opotiki district is seething with indignation over the extravagance of the administration of the present Bay of Plenty hospital district, due principally to the Health Department, which insists on lavish expenditure, and compels the ratepayers to pay. A public meeting was held last night, when the Afnyor outlined the situation, mentioniiig particularly the erection of a large hospital at AVliakatane at a cost of £20,000, compared with £3,500 for the Opotiki hospital. The Alayor pointed, out that Opotiki district have to con-> tribute more than AVliakatane, owing to higher valuations. He quoted figures showing the separate district, comprising Opotiki County and Borough, could he administered more economically and efficiently. A resolution was passed unanimously in favour of severance from Whakatnue district. A committee was appointed to obtain signatures for a petition to Parliament.
