THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
The Wages ‘‘Cut.”
A moderate reduction of wages at the present time corresponds to some extent, at all events, with the movement in ’lie cost of living, and is therefore warranted in so far as wages now include cost-of-living bonuses ; while the relief to employers may save many a harrassed business . from reducing its operations—and its staff. Thus the workers may be ultimately better off. It is fair to mention now that the onus is an employers generally to make good by reducing the prices of commodities so far as the reduction in their wage bills makes this possible. And it is no offence to say they have had plenty of practice in the gentle art of ‘‘passing it on,” as, of course, they were compelled to do.—Lyttelton Times.
