Mr J. C. Lewis, Registrar of Patents for the Dominion, has left for England to represent New Zealand at the* Empire Patents Conference. The calling of the conference was arranged when the Prime Minister was in England. The main object of the meeting is the establishment of a system whereby patents granted in the United Kingdom and the Dominions shall be valid throughout the Empire. At the present time separate patent rights have to he obtnined in India and all self-governing Dominions. The Patent Office, which is under the general administration of the Department of Justice, will he carried on and the duties of the Registrar undertaken by the Deputy-Registrar (Mr H. T. Atkinson).

The death took place in the Westport Hospital on Tuesday of Miss Elizabeth McDiarmid, eldest daugliter of Mr John McDiarmid, engineer of the Westport Harbour dredger, Eileen Ward. Deceased who was a music teacher by profession, had been in ill-henlM. for some considerable time. She was admitted to the hospital on Sunday seriously ill. Workers! We regret to record the death at Auckland on Sunday of a very old former lesident of Hokitika in the person of Mrs Butland, who passed away at an advanced age. Deceased was a resident of the town from the early days until a few years ago, when she removed to the North Island. Her husband predeceased her a good many years ago.
