Returned Soldiers’ Association.
MONDAY, Bth MAY. The monthly meeting of the Executive of the local branch of Returned Soldiers was held last evening at 7.30. There were present Messrs I). J. Evans (in the chair), J.Callan, H. Sliand, W. Head, T. Stuart, AY. P. Morgan (Treasurer), and Tlios. Kerr (Secretary). The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and correspondence received. It was moved that Mr Spratt, of Christchurch, represent the Hokitika Branch of the R.S.A. at the District Conference which is to be held at Christchurch on the 14th inst.
The President stated that approximately £IOO had been realised on tho poppies sold on Poppy Day.
It was resolved that a letter be forwarded to the Mayoress and ladies expressing appreciation for the good work carried out by them during the Poppy Day campaign. It was resolved to forward a letter of thanks to the Vicar of All Saints’ Church, Hokitika, who so kindly donated the collection to the Poppy Day Fund.
The President expressed his pleasure at the muster of Returned Soldiers both morning and afternoon on Anzae Day. The Anzae Ball was reported to have been a. huge success. Great credit is due to the secretary, his energetic committees, and all who had contribuTed to the success of the hall. We feel sure that had it not been for the inclement state of the weather the ball would lmve been an even greater success.
Tbe first of the fortnightly assemblies will commence on the 17th inst at the Drill Hall, Hokitika.
It was reported by the President that the Defence Department were vacating the Horticultural Hall shortly, and negotiations were put in hand for converting the Hall into suitable Club Rooms. It was moved that the Westland Racing Club be accorded a hearty vote of thanks for their courtesy to the Returned Soldiers in admitting them free to their meetings. It was mentioned that Mr Clutln McKenzie, M.P., would be arriving by Saturday evening's express, and that he will deliver an address in the Town Hall on Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock. All are cordially invited to attend. It was resolved to farewell Sergt. Major Mclntosh, who has been transferred to Christchurch in the Fire Brigade Club Rooms on Thursday evening. During the Sergt Major’s stay on the Coast he has proved himself a very valuable member of the Executive of the R.S.A. The members voiced tlieir regret at his early departure.
