Fire Brigade Competitions
SUCCESSFUL REEFTON GATHERING. REEFTON, May 7. The West Coast Fire Brigades’ Demonstration took place in Roefton on Saturday, and it was a gioat success. On account of the waiter pipes not being laid on the Strand, tlie events were run off' in different parts of the town. The following were the officials who carried out their duties to tlie entire satisfaction of the competing brigades : —Judges : Superintendent Browning and siib-Supcrint'ndent Dee:e examiners, Lieut. McKendry, Captain Reseigh and Captain Bright; Timekeepers. Messrs Hansby, Whittle Lockington ; Blackboard Steward, Air Goodyer; megaphonist, Air C. Stowe; starter Air S. Austin ; secretary. Air Jack Walton.
The visitors spoke in glowing terms of the manner in which they were ieceived, and treated by tlie Reefton File Brigade and of the amount of good work done by Secretary Willis, who left nothing undone to make tlie gathering such a great success.
In the evening the visitors were entertained by the Reefton Brigade at a banquet. Captain Reseigh presiding, at which the prizes won by the various brigades were presented. Toasts, songs and recitations, with selections of a very high order by the Dennislon Fire Brigade Orchestra Were kept going till midnight, when the singing of “Auld Lang vne,” terminated the proceedings.
There were six events on the programme, and of these. Grcyrw.it'i F.re Brigade’s team won no fewer than four, while Hokitika scored one win. and Reefton Brigade one win. Hokitika scored three seconds and a third: Grevmouth one third; Cobden a second Denniston two seconds and a third: and Reefton a second and two thirds. The amounts woij by the succcessfiil brigades were as follows:—Greyliiouth £4-1 1 Os; Hokitika £2O 10s; Reefton til 10s; Denniston £11; Cobden £3 10s There were eight brigades represented by teams, namely Reefton, Grovinotitli, Denniston, Westport. Cobden, Hokitika, Kumara and Alillcrtun. Following are the detailed results: Three Alen I lose Event—Greyinouth (44see) 1. Cobden and Denniston (51 sec) equal 2. There were 11 teams competing in this event. Five Men Hose and Union Event— Hokitika (3osee) 1, Denniston (44sco) 2, Greyinouth (45 l-ssec) 3. Westport team was disqualified. Four other teams also competed Five Alen Hose and Ladder Event.— Greyinouth (Glsec) 1, Hokitika (71 4-5 see) 2, Reefton (85 j sec) 3. Four other teams competed. Two ATeu Coupling Event —Reefton B. (37 l-ssec) 1, Hokitika (38 4-ssec) 2. Reefton A. (39.Vsec) 3. A dozen teams competed in this event. Baby Rescue Event (two men).— Greyinouth (24 3-ssec) 1, Reefton (26J sec) 2, Hokitika 32 l-ssee) 3. Disabled Hose and Reel Event (for five men). —Greyinouth (78 2-ssee) 1. Hokitika (83 2-ssec) 3, Denniston (lOGsec) 3. Four other teams competed.
