The vi’al statistics for Greater Wellington for April appear to indicate a fall in the britli rate of about 25 pjr i|?nt, icomitored wi,Ui the figures for the previous months, and also the monthly averages for past years. Far the period stated there .were only 149 births as against 200 for March of this year and 208 for April.of 1921. Lite deaths numbered 76 and the marriages ]oß—almost the monthly average. Dr Trilby King says that the birthrate, not only in Wellington, but a” over New Zealand, going steadily down. It dropped from 24 per 1000 in 1017 to 21 in 1921. It was 35 in 1885. The birthrate should be 30 per 1000 PETITION TO PARLIAMENT. WELLINGTON, May 4. Mr Boyd, of Onolmnga Zoo fame, intends to petition Parliament for £IO,OOO compensation for loss incurred through interference with his- collection by the Onehunga, Borough Council. backed by legislation. If unsuccessful, he intends to start litigation and take the matter to the Privy Council, if need be. R.S.A MEMORIAL. WELLINGTON, May 4.

The local R.S.A. hns resolved to take immediate action for the erection of a permanent cenotaph in 'Wellington, and has appointed a committee to go into the question of design and raising of funds. MAN KILLED. AUCKLAND, May 3. John Henry Dean, aged 33, was shot on the Wliangamarino River, near Huntiy, through the accidental discharge of a gun while he was duck shooting. He was placing decoys in position, and was shot through the heart, death being instantaneous. He was a married man, with six children, and a' resident of Mercer. WRECKAGE SIGHTED. WELLINGTON, May 3. The following message has been received by tlie secretary oi the Post and Telegraph Department from the radio at Auckland at 9.15 p.m.:—“The s.s. Kailua has sent the following: East Cape Island, 188 degrees. 4 2-3 miles, passed vessel’s spar, like top-gallant mast, floating vertically six feet above water. Apparently attached to wreckage below.’
