A sudden death took place nt Westport on Thursday nt 2.15 p.m., when Mr Edward Gartliwnite, railway crossing keeper at Westport, a married man, died suddenly from heart failure. At I the time, deceased was on duty at | Wakefield Street railway crossing. He | had complained in the morning of ill health, hut continued work and was at his post just prior to the departure of the train when he fell down and railwaymen ran over to hint to find that he was dead. Dr Meade later gave a certificate of death from heart failure, making it unnecessary to hold an inquest. Deceased, some years ago, lost a leg from an accident in the railway, replacing it with an artificial member. He was a faithful and vigilant keeper of his post, very popular with all in the service and news of his death was received with deep regret. Deceased is survived by a widow and one dough- ] ter, to whom the community extends ’ its sympathy in their sad and sudden bereavement. ,

The President of the Greymcuth Athletic and Cycling Club (Mr .T. F. Wilson) stilted last evening that the Clnli will probably organise a sports meeting to he held at (Ireymouth towards the end of this year, to consist of running, chopping alid sawing events. The prices of certain classes of West Coast timber has been reduced in Christchurch, the drop being from Is to 3s per 100 ft. The reduction is operative from May i, and it has been decided upon by the North Canterbury Timber Merchants’ Association, ill anticipation of it drop in prices oil the West Coast, which is announced to take effect from June 1. The trade has taken this action in order to meet competition in timber which lias developed from Southland, and also to stimulate building operations, if possible. Actually the reductions will not make a great deal of difference in the cost of n house because they only apply to undressed timbers.
