The football season opened yesterday. The weather was cold, but fine. The games created considerable interest. The results were : Oriental (11) beat University (6). Petone (11) beat Marist (0). Berhampore (9) beat Poneke (-1). Old Boys (11) beat Selwyn (9). Athletic (a) beat Wellington (0).
FOOTBALL FINALS. (Received This Tiny at 8 a.m.) LONDON, April 29. At Rugby, Newport bent Bristol by 5 to 3; Cardiff beat Donell.v by 9 to 6. The Association Cup final was played at Stamford Bridge in the presence of 53,000 spectators. Hiuldesfield defeated Preston North End by 1 goal to nil. The winning goal was due to a penalty kick in the second half in front of the goal. The Northern Union Cup final, Hull v. Rochdale Hornets resulted in a win for the latter !>v 9 to 10.
