THE CANBERRA STRIKE. SYDNEY, April 28

A deputation asked' Sir G. Fuller to intervene in the Canberra strike. Fuller promised to consult Mr Hughes on the latter’s arrival at Sydney shortly. He could not believe Mr Foster was susceptible to Melbourne influences though the latter were determined to prevent, if possible, the establishment of the Federal capital in its own home. Whilst he was unable to decide the merits of the Federal dispute, if was his duty to endeavour to prevent unemployment in the State. A message from Queanbeyan states Mr Foster has compromised and suggested the men return to work at the old rates of pay but new hours. The men refused. The position otherwise is unchanged. A majority of Labour party drafted a tentative policy including complete Australian Self-Government as a British community, with one sovereign Parliament for the Commonwealth the abolition of State Parliament and Government and all duplicated departments to he amalgamated. Federal electorates to be grouped according to a population quota, means of conimunitv of interests.

Mr Henley announced that Government has decided to dispose of the State lime and brick works at Botany Bay by tender or sale. The capital cost was £37,251 sterling and accumulated losses £19.827.

An Australian trade union congress is to be. held in Melburno in June, he said, and would probably formulate a definite policy for the safeguarding of workers. He reminded the men that it was remarkable that the previous industrial upheaval occurred during the Nationalist regime and another was threatening on its return to power.
