Air F. Cholerton, optician, has been unexpectedly called away and left for Auckland this afternoon. He will return to Hokitika in about ten days.
The complete returns in connection with tin' sale of poppies for the Returned Soldiers’ Association are not yet available. Upwards of 680 are in hand, with several country returns still to come, while in addition the collection at All Saints’ Church on Anzac Day, amounting to 611 5s 3d, has been handed in to the fund. It is hoped that the full returns will approximate £IOO.
Judge W. E. Rawson, of the Nati.e Land Court, is on a visit to Hokif ' a and district. Air Rawson arrived la* l evening, accompanied hy Air R. P Dykes of the Native Trust Office, Wellington.’ Judge Rawson is the Vlwive Trustee, and on the present tour llis Honor is inspecting various Native Reserves and holdings. A meeting of the Committee of the Westland Racing Club was held last evening Present - Alessrs Williams (elmir), Rutland, Whiley, Sellers, Bruce, Alclntosh, Thompson, Houston, Yarrail, AI (-Gregor and Evans. The Treasurer’s statement in connection with t.ie recent meeting showed receipts £1.796 and the expenditure £1619, yielding a sui pi us of £176. The. Government taxation on the meeting was in the region of £665. Tlie stakes for the meeting totalled £7OO. The statement was received and adopted, and tlie accounts passed for payment. A’otcs of thunks to the Indies who 1 ■ nil assisted with tlie refreshment and luncheon rooms were passed, and their services greatly appreciated. The racing dates for next season were selected as follows for'submission to the Racing Conference : Summer meeting. Tuesday and AYednes. dny. December 26 (Boxing Day) and 27; autumn meeting, Easter AA rednesday, April I, 1923. Regarding improvements on the course it was resolved to arrange with Mr 11. Thompson for the removal of the totalisator house to a fresh site to give more room fn r the
public round the building. The. intention is to shift the building sideways a little more than its own width, which will give better access all round and permit of more windows being used for investment purposes. It was reported the caretaker would overhaul the racing track at once. The course would be harrowed and rolled, and top-dressed with, suitable sand 'soil from South Hokitika. It was resolved to enforce the use of the training track in future for exercise purposes. The Chairman complimented the officials on the success with which till’ recent meeting passed off.
