Lord Justice Moore, in opening Belfast Assizes, snid it whs no use blinking the fact that the population of four hundred thousand in Belfast, were being held up by eight hundred criminals. Since February there had been ■ house breaking cases, 130 robberies, and 37 cases of endangering life.
A TENSE SITUATION. j LONDON, April 26. | The situation is tense in Mullinqar in view of De Valera’s visit next Sunday. The rival forces are fortifying 1 public buildings and as a protection ! against both sides organising looting pn a huge scale, and to prevent the township being terrified, several big guns have been brought in. The windows of commandeered buildings are pandbagged. Republncans attacked a lorry load of Free State soldiers in Market Square. The streets were deserted save for the combatants. Six Republicans were captured.
