On Tuesday afternoon about 4 o’clock mi accident of It rather sensational kind occurred on the Barrytown Road. at. the Ten Mile Blufl. The victim was Mr Joe Roberts, nil old Rarrytown district resident, who is 78 years of age. He sustained a- fall over the road embankment dropping a distance of no less than 121) feet, and it is a miracle that he is still alive: It seems that a bag of chaff fell out ol the vehicle Roberts was in. and he got out on the seaward side of the cliff where here is a sheer drop of 120 feet from the edge of the road. lii dismounting Roberts, failing to secure a footing on the narrow ledge between the cart and the edge of the road, lost his balance. He grasped at an occupant of tile cart, Miss Mu.ndy, to check his fall, but she was held back by Mr Cargill. When 'Roberts lost hold of the girl, he slid over thflj edge of the cliff, dislodging in his descent a quantity of mullock on the face of the terrace. Amongst this he slid down a. distance of 120 feet to the bottom of the declivity. The fall resulted in the old man sustaining several broken ribs while his scalp was lifted, and a very severe wound in the head was inflicted, in addition to a. severe bruising about the body generally. When medical assistance was secured the injured man was unconscious and he was conveyed to the Grey River Hospital, where ho is making progress towards recovery.
