WESTLAND HOSPITAL BOARD
MONDAY, APRIL 24
The Board met at 8 p.m. Present: Messrs J. J. Breeze (President), Blank, Davidson, Burrell, Ritchie, Monk, and Morel. The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved.
THE YEAR’S LEVY. From Westland County Council, reviewing the statement submitted, conveying the figures on which it was proposed to make the annual levy, pointing out some inconsistencies, and asking for the careful attention of the Board with a view to a further reduction of the levy for the ensuing year. —Received. The Secretary stated the cost of the steam laundry was C.’iOl7, not £3077, as mentioned in the Council’s letter.
From Valuer General, Wellington, stating the capital values of the contributing local bodies were—Westland County £(>l2,-107; Hokitika Borough £202,147 ; Kumara Borough £21,878; Boss Borough £19,601, a total of £856,033, with a population of 7,557. Received. From Hospital Department, Wellingaon, stating the capital expenditure requirements had been agreed to.—Received. Mr Breeze said he did not see any possibility of making any further reduction whatever. He did not see what could be done to reduce the amount, which might have to be increased towards the end of the year. Mr Burrell thought they ought to increase the levy, not reduce it, by £IOOO at least.
Mr Blank moved that estimates as framed, he now confirmed. Mr Burrell seconded the motion. He thought that the.contributing bodies should bo warned that there was a possibility of a further supplementary levy at the end of the year.
Mr Davidson supported the motion, which was agreed to. Mr Blank moved that the contributory bodies he asked to make nine monthly payments, the last one to he made by .‘3lst January, 1923; this being necessary owing to the Board’s overdraft being limited to £6oo.—Seconded by Mr Davidson. Alter a brief discussion this was agreed to.

From North Canterbury Board, forwarding motion carried calling on Covernment to call tt conference to deal with venereal diseases, and asking for the support of Board.—Received ; to he ; supported. From J. A. Hart, Koiterangi, applying for position as clerk of works for new wing.—Received. REPORTS.
Ike House Committee reported conditions at the hosoital were satisfactory; two vacancies on the nursing staff, which the .Matron was arranging for. Received. From Finance Committee, recommending payments amounting to £492 7s 2d.—Received. From Treasurer, reporting receipts Cl 41(5 3s; payments, Cll2O 4s Id; debit balance C7OO 4s Bd.—Received. NEW WJNO TENDERS. Tho Secretary reported that at a meeting of the town members on Friday last the matter of the erection of the l . v wing and administrative quarters was lengthily considered and it was recommended to the Board that the Board carry on the work itself, appointing a supervisor. -Mr Blank moved that the Board undertake to carry out the work of the erection of the new wing and administrative quarters by day labor and appoint a supervisor. He did so because lie recognised that there would be a fall in prices of materials, and the Board by carrying out of the work j would save that money. j •Mr Davidson seconded the motion. He felt that it would amply repay tho Board to carry out the work, as there could be -considerable savings effected that would save the Board a substantial amount, >
A discussion followed in which, members discussed the possibility of saving a considerable sum by making alterations to the present plans and specifications.
The motion was then agreed to. M r Breeze moved that applications be invited for the position of supervisor.—Seconded by Mr Moult. After discussion, the motion was agreed to, Messrs Blank and Davidson dissenting, a special meeting to be held at 2 p.m. on Mnv 2nd to deal with same. The Chairman moved that a committee consisting of Messrs Breeze, Davidson, Blank and Burrell confer with Drs Baird and Teiehehnanu to go into the question of economies to be made in the new works. —Seconded by Mr Monk and carried. Mr Breeze moved that a Building Committee lie appointed consisting of Messrs Davidson (Chairman), Blank, (Morel, and Ritchie.—Seconded by Mr (Monk and carried. It was resolved to write to Mr Allen Government architect, asking him to supply all available information in connection with the new work, for the information of the Board. TENDERS.
For hot water apparatus for Manson and Ellis ward and operating theatre. Tenders were received its follows: Scale and Johnston, Hokitika, £lslll 3s 13d. Jenkins mid Mack Ltd., Wellington, £1750. 0. W. Davis and Co., Dunedin, £1787. Vailo mid Co., Ltd., Christchurch, £2300. The tender of Pickering Pros, of Mastcrton, for £1368 18s, was ruled out ns informal, there being no deposit. The tender of Messrs Seale and Johnston for £lsOl .‘3s 3d was: accepted. The Board rose at 10.20 p.m.
