CAS FA' .1 MO ATS SHARP. (by TELEOItArH— PEIt riIESS ASSOCIATION] WANGANUI, April 22 Jack Casey, of Australia, to-day defeated Archie Sharp of Wanganui, by four lengths, in a race for L‘so aside over the championship sculling course on the Wanganui River. A worse day for such a contest could not have been chosen. The river was in high Hood, as a result of recent heavy rains, and the weather was cold and stormy. A strong wind blew down the course, and heavy rain showers fell at intervals.

The scullers got away well together, their boats shooting ahead at a great rate. At the half mile, Sharpe was slightly ahead. However, at the mile, which was covered in lour minutes lo seconds, Casey was leading bv a length. Casey, who made more of the current than Sharpe, was three lengths ahead at the two miles post. The time at this "point was eight minutes 4G seconds From this onward, there was a good struggle. Casey got well under the right hank, where the current was strongest. Sharpe kept out in the middle. The local man quickened up in the last quarter mile, hut the Australian went on, and he won by lorn lengths in the extraordinary time of Llmins sGsecs. Padtltm and Tiadficld followed the race.

A ROUGH PASSAGE. WANGANUI, April 23. Just before the mile was reached in the sculling race, Sharpe, who was slightly leading, struck timber, which interfered with him momentarily, and allowed Casey to draw even.

Casey, however, later on, touched timber also, saying after the race that he had injured his boat. Casey is a nephew of the late Harry Searlo, Australia’s famous sculler.
