POPPY DAY.
Poppy Day is being continued today. The emblems tire artificial poppies made by tho widows and children in the devastated areas of Northern France. The object of Poppy Day is two-fold. Firstly, tho red poppy of Flanders fields has been adopted by the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association as its memorial flower, and it is the Association’s desire that all relatives and friends of deceased soldiers should wear a poppy in their memory on Anzac Day. Secondly, it is hoped to raise sufficient funds to provide work for returned soldiers who find themselves unemployed during the coming winter. The small poppies will be sold for Is. and tho large ones for 2s (id. aind a sum of 3d out of every Is will he forwarded to France to defray the cost of the flowers. The remainder of the money will be devoted entirely to relieve soldier unemployment throughout the Dominion, and in every instance the money will he spent in the district in which it is raised. The Returned Soldiers’ Association will not benefit financially from this fund in any respect, hut the whole of the money will he devoted to the two objects mentioned. SATURDAY’S SUCCESSEUL SALES. Despite the rough nature of the day on Saturday the ladies’ committee “carried on,” and were rewarded with a successful sale. The total cash received for the day was over £">(). This was very satisfactory under the circumstances. and it is hoped to dispose of the balance of the poppies in hand to-day and to-morrow. During; the forenoon and afternoon on Saturday a number of pupils from the secondary school undertook the town sale, while at night their senoir« took the work in hand, yiesdaines Perry (Chairwoman). Butler, Frquhart. Morgan, Benjamin, Chesney and Rutland woic at the headquarters shop in Revcll Street and took charge of the genera,! nroanisation under which the sale was so successfully conducted.
