FIRE ON STEAMER.
IN RiARANGA’S CARGO
AUCKLAND, April 21. A fire broke out in the S.S.Ai Company’s steamer Raranga at the wharf at 8.5 this evening The outbreak was among some copra in the afterport deck, and the City Fire Brigade were enabled ( to subdue it in half an hour. As far as is known, the damage was confied . to the copra, of which there wore seve- ( rnl hundred bags Although large quantities of wool were stowed nearby, and were at times in danger, they escaped damage The ship probably fared 110 worse than to have her decks buckled by heat The cargo, consisting of wool, and produce was loaded at Napier, Russell and Auckland. The vessel had ( nearly completed loading, and was to ( have sailed for London on Tuesday. .
ROLL OF NOTES SNATCHED. CHRISTCHURCH. April 21
The snatching of Cl 3 in notes from the hand of a person who had just collected a dividend at the Addington racecourse on Wednesday led to the appearance of Eugene M’Cormack. twenty-six years of age, before Air Wyvern Wilson, SAL, at the Magistrate’s Court for sentence.
The charge against M’Cormaek j was that on Wednesday, at the Addington racecourse, he stole from the person of one Arthur George Chaney j £l3 in money.
The complainant said that in the • sixth race he backed Dolly Dillon Af- j ter the race he collected his dividend, lie walked back from the window, .a;nd was just placing the notes in his pocket when accused grabbed them. Accused had gone about two strides when witness caught him from behind and threw him. Then Detective Sheehan came up and took accused into custody.
Detective Sheehan said that when lie arrived on the scene accused was lying on the ground with a roll of notes in his hand. Complainant took the notes from accused. On the way to the police station accused said lie intended to plead guilty to the charge, and added that iic wanted the money as he had a child to siipjwrt. Accused was slightly under the influence of drink.
Asked by the Magistrate if lie had anything to say. accused replied that he was under the influence of drink, and did not know what he was doing. Accused pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
