AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. j N.S.W. TOURNEY. SYDNEY, April 21. The first rounds of the annual tennis tournament opened at Double Ray in fine weather, before a small attendance. Tlie New Zealand ladies were pitted against the New South Wales ladies in the singles and doubles. The courts were in good condition. The New Zealand ladies were victorious in one of the singles and one of the doubles. Miss Curtis beat Miss St George 6—2, (5—3, displaying fine foreRand driving, and also volleying well. .Miss Laseelles beat Miss McFarlane, 6_o, o—2. Miss McFarlane excelled "Sk back line play. Miss Gray beat Miss Paton, o—2, 0-4). Miss Pa ton was not equal to the inter-State standard. Miss Lloyd beat Miss Wellwood, 6—4, o—2.0 —2. The latter was weak in her returns. In the doubles Misses St George and Laseelles beat Misses Curtis and Wellwood, o—l, o—2. The New South Wales combination was too strong, though Miss Curtis was displaying form of a high standard. Misses McFarlane and Paton beat Misses Lloyd and Gray 5 —7, o—3, o—l, after a keen contest. Miss McFarlane played an l outstanding game, but Miss Paton was somewhat feeble. On the day’s play Miss Curtis stood out from her colleagues and opponents, and greatly impressed the critics. The quartette will be engaged against New South Wales again on Saturday : n four singles and two doubles, which • - series will be continued on Tuesday
