GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS

WELLINGTON, April 19.

Recently the Government appointed a Publications and Publicity Committee for the purpose of effecting revision, co-ordination, and economy in regard to Government publications. This Committee will review the prices of publications and the free lists, which under successive administrations, have grown to undue proportions. It is certain that considerable economy will ensue as the result of the Government’s action.

ECONOMY CAMPAIGN

WELLINGTON, April 17

The Hon G. J. Anderson, Minister in charge of the Publicity Department, says that recently the Government appointed a Publications and Publicity Committee for the purposes of effecting revision, co-ordination and economy in regard to Government publications, reviewing prices and free lists of publications. Considerable progress has already been made by the committee in the direction indicated. The aim ot the Now Zealand Government is to make Government publications contribute more substantially to the cost of their printing, though the increases in prices of the more generally circulated documents will by no means he as severe as is the ease in Britain. There is no doubt also that a practice lias grown up of too great liberality in free distributions, which the need for economy requires to lie curtailed.

'Flic handicap draughts tourney, eonducted by the New Zealand Draughts Association, concluded to-night. The points actually gained by the leaders are: J. A. Borcliam 27.1, J. A. Lucas 27, G A. Brown (Christchurch) 211.

The sealed handicap points will he announced later. Boreliam, Lucas, Brown, and ilea have qualified lor the championship of Australasia, play in which will commence to-morrow morning and will he concluded early next week.

OUTBREAK OF TYPHOID

58 CASES AT AUCKLAND

AUCKLAND. April 21

There are 58 eases of typhoid at the hospital, including fifty from Mt. Albert district. The death occurred of a patient admitted from Morningside in a low condition. Dr V alintine and the local health authorities visited Mt Albert district and came to the eonelusion that it would he practically confined there now and well in hand, with the precautions taken to ensure a pure water supply.

In reference to Hannan’s statement that he will not row a private match against Paddon as the latter suggested. and will only row if the title is included, the champion says that ends it. Hannan can have a private match or no race. li lie wants the title lie will have to go to Australia. In any ease, A rust will have the first race for the championship, as his challenge was the first in.
