North Island mails and passengers connected with the "West Coast express at Christchurch this morning.

At Greyniouth Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, Titos. Sweeney, 42 years of age, was charged with escaping from lawful custody on the night of Monday last. He pleaded guilty. Sweeney had been arrested on the barque White Pine by Constable Mitrch. He was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, which term he will serve in Paparua gaol. Henry Pern, an Esthonian, 37 years of age and an A.B. on the White Pine, apeared on a charge of landing at Greyniouth without a passport as required by the statutes governing tbe conduct of aliens, was sentenced to one months’ imprisonment, the account for maintenance to be charged to the Captain of the White Pine, later to be deducted from Pern’s wages. The Bench also ordered that lie be put on board the vessel when she leaves. Henry Murphy was charged with being a rogue and vagabond without visible lawful means of support. Defendant pleaded guilty. The Seu.Sergi. seated that Murphy was suffering from a complaint which would prevent him from working or from associating with other persons; ho was quite unable to earn: his own living. He proposed that Murphy should be sent to Paparua prison for six months, where he will he aljlc to get attention and care. Murphy stated that lie would have no objection to this course, and the Bench passed sentence accordingly
