The 111.55 train from Otira yesterday moining was delayed in the vicinity of Jacksons, as a result of a land slide coming down on to the line. It is at ilii s spot that a slide occurred near Christmas time. A party of workmen from Otira repaired the damage and as far as can be ascertained there is no immediate danger of a further fall.

A rock weighing about lour tons fell upon the railway line-early on Tuesday morning midway between Wallsend and Dobson. The train from Greymouth to blackball, leaving Grey at 6 a.in., ran into the obstruction in the darkness, the locomotive being damaged to such an extent that it was unable to proceed. The van also was somewhat damaged. The accident caused delay to all other trains using this line.

At a meeting of the West Coast Rugby Union oil Tuesday night at Greymouth. the Westland Sub-Union applied for the rights of a sub-union for the ensuing year. The death took place at Christchurch on Wednesday, April 12th of •Ur IV. St George Douglas, who uiiti’ bis retirement some ten years ago was uie of the best known officials of the Rost and Telegraph Department. He was 73 years of age. He joined the accountant’s branch of the Post Office, Wellington, in 1869. He was thence transferred to Hokitika and later to W estport. Subsequently lie was appointed Postmaster at Charlestown (now non-existent, but then an important mining centre), and later at Ashburton. In 1897 lie was appointed Chief Postmaster at Hokitika, and later at Westport, subsequently becoming Inspector for the Midland district (Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough and Westland) and finally, in 1907, lie was appointed Chief Postmaster at Dunedin. He retired, owing to the age-limit, in June 1912. after 43 years’ service with the Post and Telegraph Department. He held two postal records. He was an officer-in-cliarge from the age of 21 years, and throughout his 43 years’ service was never once absent on sick leave. He leaves a widow, one daughter and two sons.
