RACING NEWS,
KUMAitA RACES
The weather turned out very unfavourably for the holiday yesterday. 'Master Day gave the promise of settled conditions, but overnight a misty rain set in ,and prevailed throughout yesterday. As a consequence the Greymouth racecourse, where the Kumaia Club’s meeting was held was sodden and heavy. Despite the untoward conditions there was a large attendance. The train from Hokitika was well patronised, and the travellers were afforded the convenience of being taken straight to Omoto without the trouble of changing trains. The line appointments of the Greymouth Club at the disposal of visitors yesterday afforded plenty of shelter, and the. day passed off with a minimum of inconveaiicncc. The sport was good. All the fields were large, and the racing wan very entertaining. Inhere were many surprises, the favourite winning once only. The results spoke well for the work of the handica-pper .Hr Noble. The starting by Mr B utland was very satisfactory indeed, all the despatches were good, and there were no delays at the post. The Deputy Judge, Mr Ford, was always very prompt in his decisions, the numbers being hoisted very quickly. Tho various officials all worked admirably, and the stipendiary officer had a sinecure. The meeting was a pronounced success despite the unfavourable weather. The racing was put through sharp to time, and altogether it was a very sueessful sporting dajy.
