Westland Progress League

THURSDAY, APRIL 13

The Executive met at 7.15 o’clock. Present: Messrs W. J. Jeffries (President), It. Wild, J. Ritchie, W. J. Butler, T. W. Bruce, D. J. Evans, J. M. Morris, J. J. Mclntosh. The'minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed and the outward correspondence approved.

INWABD CORRESPONDENCE. From Canterbury Philosophical Society, stating arrangements could be made for lecturers to visit the Coast, and suggesting .Hokitika and Greymouth be included. It would be necessary to pay the travelling expenses of two lecturers and the President.—Received. The Chairman favored steps being taken to arrange the matter. It was resolved to communicate with the W.E.A. Greymoutli, with regard to arranging joint action. From P. R. C'limie, Canterbury Progress League, replying that as soon as the course of lectures for the Hokitika winter school was decided upon, Canterbury students to attend the school would be enrolled. —Received. The Hon Secretary stated the svllabiis had not yet been notified. As soon as the information was to hand the particulars would he notified.

From W.E.A., Runanga, offering every assistance with regard to the Hokitika Winter School, and stating there would lie some students from the district.—Received with thanks. GENERAL. The Chairman stated the attendance of the citizens at the public meeting lately with regard to the winter school was not satisfactory. However, the arrangements were progressing, and tickets at one guinea each to support the project were now on sale. The tickets would admit holders to all lectures. The hotelkeepers present at the public meeting had indicated that a reasonable tariff would he charged to the visiting lecturers and students. After discussion it was resolved with regret that owing to the difficulty of arranging the catering the idea of the communal mid-day meal he abandoned. Mr Ritchie referred to the continued delay on the part of the Government in going on with the Bruce Bay Landing, and quoted the remarks of Capt Rollons of the Hinemoa, who had lately visited the locality, and was strongly in favor of proceeding with the work for which €1.300 had been voted by Parliament. He moved that the Minister ot Public Works ho written to and asked to arrange for the work to proceed. Mr Bruce seconded. The motion was carried. and it was resolved to ask the Canterbury Progress League to assist in having the work undertaken. Mr Bruce thought the local bodies of the town hould take a greater interest in the work of the League. The public men of the town were not supporting the League in its efforts to advance local interests, lie suggested that the local bodies be written to, ■ and the moral support of the members invited.

Mr Wild said there seemed to la* some feeling of opposition to the League, which was rather unaccountable. He thought the work of of the l.engnc would speak for itself. The Chairman said their finance had been loaded at the outset in an eflort to advertise the district. Toe local bodies had helped financially, out they would he glad of a larger membership. He moved that an application he made to the Licensed Victuallers Association for a grant to the funds. Mr 1L Wild seconded. —Carried. Mr Mclntosh referred to the long delay in placing culverts over the open crossings on the main south mad between Mikonui and Fergusons. He moved representations he mad * to the Public Works Department, and dissatisfaction expressed at the delay in regard to this work which was of an urgent character. The President seconded the motion which was carried. It was resolved to push the sale of the guinea tickets to assure the financial success of the winter school in May next. The annual meeting was fixed ior Tuesday, 9th May, and it was .decided to urge a large attendance of the general public to assist in furthering the interests of the district. The meeting closed at 8.2!) p.m.
