ANZAC COMMEMORATION

Anzac Day will be • commemorated j on Tuesday, April 26th. It will be j almost a close holiday, the legislation j passed last session making the day J virtually a holy day rather than a j holiday. The local arrangements will | be on the lines of those of former years, and the following programme j of commemoration has been drawn (
up:— 10 a.m. Military Church Parade; fall in at Drill Shed, Camp Street, in the following* order: —New Zealand flag. Municipal Band, war veterans, returned soldiers, territorials, senior cades, pipe band, nurses, boy scouts, firemen, schools, local bodies, friendly societies, general public etc. Defence officer will take command of the Parade. The procession will move via lie veil and Stafford Streets to the respective Churches, where Divine Worship will, commence at 10.15., the services to last about an hour.
At th e dose of the Church service, the procession will reform in Staffoid Street at the Pioneers’ Memorial and, proceed to Cass Square, at the Westland War Memorial, where a public memorial service will he held at 11.45
a.m. The proceedings at the Memorial will open with the singing of the “Old Hundredth” (four verses), followed, by scripture reading, prayer, conducted by the clergy. Captain Seddon. M.P., has been asked to unveil the Memorial Pedestal at the Cenotaph containing the names of the nurses rtul soldiers from Westland who fell m the war. The unveiling will lie followed by a selection from the Municipal Band, during which wreaths will be deposited on the cenotaph under the direction of Lieut. Mclntosh M.C. The National Anthem (three verses) will then ho sung bv the assemblage. Pub ]i" addresses will then he given lij His Worship the Mayor and others. Tile memorial service will close with the firing and the sounding of the I t Post, the singing of a verse of the National Anthem finally closing f!’” public service. Subsequent to the service in Cass Square the Returned Soldiers will loveh to the clock tower in Weld St. where wreaths will lie deposited in memory of the Westland men who fell in the South African campaign, and in the afternoon Hokitika cemetery will he visited and wreaths deposited cu the graves of "Westland soldiers interred there.
The Westland roll of honor contains about 175 names of nurses and soldiers from the district who fell in the Croat War. Any names not recorded will ho added if the required Information is handed in to the Town or County Clerics. So far only two names have been given in to add to the list now recorded on the polished i-rnnite pillar which is the Memorial pedestal to stand under the canopy of the cenotaph.
