HOKITIKA GOLF CLUB
The annual general meeting of the Hokitika Golf Club was held in the Education Board' Rooms last night, 25 members being present, Mr J. C. Macfarlane in the chair. Minutes of the last annual meeting were confirmed. ANNUAL REPORT. 1 have the honour to report as follows on the operations of the past year: The playing season was somewhat marred by an unusual amount of wet weather, a few of the minor events having to he carried forward to this winter for competition. Nevertheless, some very good golf and dose competition was enjoyed, the matches resulting:— Club Championship—Perham Cup: Mr A. Chesney won this event, Mr D. McCaskill taking the champion to the 33rd hole in the final. Medal Aggregate—Cranston Vase: Won by Mr A. Chesney from scratch. Bogey Aggregate—Captain’s trophy : Won by Mr T. R. Hickson. Opening Foursome —Club Trophies: Won by Mrs Staveley and Mr Mnokay. Nominated Foursome —Mr Chesney’s and Mr MoCaskill’s Trophies: Won by Miss Mclntosh and Mr Perham. dosing Foursome—Club’s Trophies: Won by Mrs Buchanan and Mr Macfarlane.
The usual inter-Club matches were played against Greymouth, and proved most enjoyable, each Club carrying off the honours on its own course.
The West Coast Golf Tournament was contested on the Omoto Links at Greymouth in September last, our players meeting with very little success. An outstanding feature of the Tournament was the performance of Mr A. Chesney in the final for the West Coast Championship, when after being i doun, he eventually took the game to the last hole against a player who subsequently won the Amateur Championship of Next Zealand.
Unfortunately, our Club was not represented at the New Zealand Championship meeting, but the success of Mr A. Sitne of the Greymouth Golf Club in capturing the premier amateur event of New Zealand is a matter for congratulation to West Coast golfers. The thanks of the Committee and members are due to Mrs W. Butler fot her generosity in presenting to the Club a very, fine tall marker, which should prove a useful adjunct to our equipment. Trophies presented by the Captain, Mrs Chesney, an<j Messrs Ellis and Me-
Caskill were also very much appreciated. The- West Coast Championship meeting was held at G reyiiloiith when a number of our players took part, but were unsuccessful iim winning any Crtiit—Miss' Moore' being runner-up to Miss Snodgrass, the champion. An added interest' to the Tournament was the playing for the first time of a teams match for a shield subscribed by the Westport, Greymouth and Hokitika Clubs to be competed for at the West Coast Championship meetings; This was won by Westport. As members decided to still provide the afternoon- teas on Saturdays, a small sub-committee consisting of Mrs Chesney and Mrs F. H. Williams was sot up to manage these, and this! arrangement worked most satisfactorily.
The Committee thanks all members for the assistance given during the past season, and also the Hokitika “Guardian” for their courtesy in publish ng reports of matches. At the meeting of delegates which took place in Greymouth during the West Coast golf tournament, it was decided that the championship meeting for the year 1922 be held on the Mahitiapua Links at Hokitika about the end of August or beginning of September next, and your Committee have busied themselves in making initial preparations for the event, the most important of which is the construction of four new holes to obviate the congestion which would inevitably occur were an attempt made to play the tournament over a nine hole course.
This improvement is entailing considerable expense, hut I am informed by your Hon. Treasurer that the Club is in in a position to well afford the monetary outlay involved. Unfortunately, no play was had during the off season, the Links being practically unfit for golf. This was due to insufficient stock being depastured thereon during the spring and early summer, and great care should be observed to prevent a recurrence of this condition. The course is still somewhat rough, hut I understand that your Ground Committee have been using every endeavour to improve matters. On behalf of vour Committee, I have to recommend that the 1922 season he opened on Saturday next, when the usual mixed foursome he played. The balance sheet for 1921-1922 will now he read by the Hon. Treasurer, and it discloses a very satisfactory financial position. , . Tn concluding, 1 would like, on behalf of the Club, to thank the press for publishing drawings and results of our various matches. Tito report and balance sheet " ore adopted. The following Officers were then elected:-Captain—Mr J. C. Macfarlane • Hon. Secretary—Mr W- Seeley ■ Hon. Treasurer— Mr T. R. Hickson’: Committee—Mesdames Macfarlaffi and Boyd, Messrs McCaskill, Galbraith, Chesney, Perham and F. Williams. Eight new members were elected. The Capt. presented the trophies won during the Season, the Ladies Championship being won by Miss' Moore and the Club Championship by Mi- A. Chesney. The Capt. congratulated members on the strong position of the Club, and after various golfing matters were discussed the meeting terminated with the usual compliment to the Chair.
LADIES’ ANNEAL 'REPORT. Ladies. —Your committee to submit the following report for tho year ended October 1921. The season was unfortunately marred by the extreme inclemency of the weather, and several matches for trophies presented had to be postponed till the 1922 season. The bad weather is to( be all the more regretted as all players were keen to return scores owing to the L.G.U. handicaps having to be readjusted at the end of the 1921 season. With the exception of that of one player, all handicaps are now longer ,but we hope this is only temporary and that given a good season we shall soon see all players back to their former handicaps, or even lower. Competition for all matches played was very keen—this being especially so amongst the new players, most of whom qualified for the junior grade. In addition to the ordinary monthly medal matches, monthly Bogey matches were played for the Beare Bowl and the Cranston Vase. The Club’s thanks are due to Mrs Ellis, Mrs J. C. Macfarlane, Mrs MoCask ill, Mrs Galbraith, and Mrs W. E. Williams, who kindly presented trophies for competition. The Senior Championship wa-s won by Miss Moore, with Mrs McCaskill as runner-up. As Miss Moore has now won the championship .for 3 years m succession, she wans outiigh„ the Championship Cup prseented by Miss Majndl. The Junior Championship was won by Mrs Langford, with Mrs Ford ns runner-up. The Beare Bowl and Cranston Vase for which bogey matches for points were played are both held by Mrs McCaskill for the ensuing year. The T,GJI silver medal was won hv Mrs McCaskill and the Bronze by Mrs Macfarlane. The Senior Eclectic Button was won by Miss Moore, and the Junior. Eclectic by Mrs Langford, Mrs Irvine winning the trophy presented to the beginners for a series of matches. Two Inter-Chib matches with Greymonth were played, one being won by Grevmonth and one by Hokitika.
