The annual meeting of the Hokitika Beautifying Association takes place r,t the Town Hall at 7.30 o’clock tomorrow evening. It is to be hoped there will lie a good attendance of the general public to support the continuance of the practical work for which the Association was organised.

The illustrated lecture to be given by Mr Will Lawson a,t the Town Hall on Thursday night next should prove a very attractive event. The theme will deal with New Zealand forests, Mr Lawson being the organiser of the N.Z. Forestry League. The 'address will be illustrated by a number of fine slides which will be exhibited by Dr Teiohelmann, who has a, very complete plant for exhibitions of the nature referred o. There will not be any charge for admission to the lecture, but a retiring collection will be taken up to defray expenses.

Asked about the Alain Highways’ Bill, Hon .T. G. Coates, said that he proposed to call a. conference of county associations and other local bodies, possibly in May. Some understanding could then be arrived at as to the 1 principles and methods of dealing with main highways. Any decision as to motor registration would have to conic before Parliament. Tn the meantime a Custom tax on tyres was being collected. As the fund accumulated, this money was earmarked for main highways. He expected that when they had sufficient money the local bodies would not quibble about details of main highways, but would be prepared to get together with the Government and help to spend the) money.

On Wednesday morning at the Rangiora Technical School it painful accident happened to Mr C. H. Hargreaves, wood work instructor. He was giving instruction in tool sharpening on a grindstone, and after cautioning the hoys of the danger of turning the stone in the wrong direction when a tool was being pressed against it, 'he placed a tool against the stone on the hand-rest block and told one of th|? hoys to turn the handle. The hoy gave the stone a vigorous start, hut unfortunately in the wrong direction. Mr Hargreaves’ right hand was drawn in between the block and the stohe and severely lacerated, the centre finger being stripped of flesh and the nail, and the other fingers were injured. The injury was so painful that Mr Hargreaves had to be placed under an anaesthetic to have the hand dressed hv Dr Burnett.
