REPAIRS WANTED

(To the Editor.) Sir.—l wish to draw the attention of our local Borough Council to the state of a portion of our road at South Hokitika. I sav, sir, with all emphasis that the portion of the road to which I refer is a positive disgrace to Hokitika. Our Deputy Mayor some time ago waxed eloquent over the disgraceful conditions existing at “Sea View Mental Hospital, and aroused the public indignation. Now I think ' if Mr Coulson or any of the Borough Councillors had occasion to use the road referred to we should he healing something about it. in other words something would he done. The matter is within jurisdiction of the Borough and therefore does not require the sanction of the Government. All progressive settlers know that the highest rate payable is had roads throuL'h the wear and tear.’ Mr Herbsman of the Chautauqua, quoted the Taranaki roads as being equal to any lie bad seen in Europe; and when one thinks of the cost of material for the Taranaki roads as compared to licrc in Westland, and although there wor (! some who objected to the expend of making their roads in Taranaki at that time, there is not a settler today v'lio would wish to go back to the old state of things. I would he willing to pay a voluntary rate to the Council equal to the average rates paid by the residents on this piece of road which in its present •ondition is well nigh impassible, if the Borough will make it fit for service.
