A message received from Melbourne says interest continues to grow there respecting the tariff negotiations . between the Commonwealth authorities and the New Zealand representative PH on. Dowuie Stewart), and the question is exciting interesting speculation in the lobbies of the Federal Parliament, Commercial circles are discussing tie question under the heading: “ h 0 holds the whip hand? ” The Melbourne “Herald” says:— “ Hon D. Stewart has made no secret of the fact that the desire of the Dominion is to bargain, and this is distinctly palatable to the Commonwealth, winch wants preference to be given on both sides.” The “Herald” continues:—‘ New Zealand is too good a customer for the Commonwealth to lose, as would bo the case if tho negotiations broke down. Tt will i>e interesting to see whether the Commonwealth’s attitude will be modified if the Dominion remains firm in hoi present demands,” and concludes the article with the question: “Does New Zealand hold the whip hand? ”
