NAUTICAL INQUIRIES. VALMARIE STRANDING. WELLNGTON, March 23. A nautical inquiry was held to-day concerning the stranding of the schooner Valmarie at Farewell Spit on February 16th. Evidence was given that the- sand banks in the vicinity shifted according to the change of the weather, two master mariners stating that the chart for this reason could not altogether he relied upon. The safety margin allowed by the master of the Valinhrio was considered by witnesses to be clear ol the sandbanks shown in the chart. Similar observations regarding shifting sands wore made at a previous sti'anding.

FERRY COLLISION

WELLINGTON, March 23.

A nautical inquiry is also being held into the collision 40 miles off Lyttelton Heads on February 26th. between the ferry steamer Maori and the auxiliary schooner Zita.

THE NEW PARTY

Mr T M .Willbrd, loader of the nor political party, visited Tiinaru this week and left to-day for Tcmuka.

In consequence of Mr James Oruigic, M.P. for Timaru, seconding the ad-(lrcss-in-Reply for the Reform Government, Mr Wilford asked him whether he intended to stand for the Reform Party or for the new Party at next election.

Mr Craigie replied that he would stand as an Independent. Mr Wilford then met the representatives of the local men, and made arrangements for the selection ol a candidate for his Party. The names of several well-known and prominent citizens wore suggested, hut lie preferred to leave the final selection till lull inquiries had boon made. Mr ( raigie has never joined the new Party.

W.C.T.U. CONFERENCE.

HAMILTON, March 24

The W.C.T.U. Convention was welcomed last night by the Deputy-Mayor and the member of Parliament lor Waikato, the Council of Free Churches and Mrs Blamircs (President of the local branch ol .the W.C.T.I .) This morning over one hundred delegates answorcj the roll call. Tho secretary’s report

showed sixteen new unions were formed during the year, with a membership of about six thousand.
