BUTTER PRICE REDUCED.
AUCKLAND, March 22
The members of the Auckland section: of the Dominion Butter Committee' leave resigned in a body, owing to their being unable to agree on the price of butter for local consumption.
The resignations are the outcome oi the New Zealand Co-opera live Dairy Coy. reducing the-price of first-grade butter, as from March 13th, to Is 2d per lb. wholesale, which is Id per lb below t!ie price fixed by the coinmiitce. The committee met to discuss- the position, and the representatives o! the company declined to agiec with a suggestion ' that the prices should he advanced to Is 4d per lb wholesale-, so as to correspond with values in the London market.

Mr Flanagan (Valuer General)questioned about the report that he advised a. Ngaroto farmer, James Smith, to file a petition in bankruptcy said Smith was shown on paper what his liabilities, other charges and rovenue fi-oinl his property were, and saw it was almost impossible to carry onFlanagan advised him to see his mortgagees and Smith said they hud already declined to give assistance. Flanagan says he gave Smith no advice.

The deliberations of (he Baity Recess Committee on the Licensing LavAmendments were continued to-day. and the committee hone to conclud'* them to-morrow morning. Their droll report and recommendations are practically complete, but it is anticipated! that when the session opens, the Committee will take an opportunity of revising tlie draft before it is finally submit led to Parliament.

WAIHI MINE FIRE WAIHI,’ March 23
A lire occurred in the underground workings of Waihi mine, number seven level at eight of clock la-st night. The Company’s up-to-date underground (ire lighting equipment was immodaitoly brought into use. The ore prducing points in the mine note not affected, as the area of the fire was confined to the old workings, hut a. certain number of men are out. ofj work pending the subjugation of the outbreak and the clearance of smoke, from the lire area.

The Supreme Court is occupied in; bearing the application for a declaratory judgment on the question whether* the harbour scheme prepared by George* bvsnar, contains an element of novelty. The Harbour Board contends itj does not. and that therefore it is noU liable to nay Lysnar remuneration, therefore, in accordance with t-be agreement between them. The Board recently adopted a scheme propounded by Mr Leslie Reynolds which Mr Lysnar claims is' practically the same. T>uproeeedings are ol a iormal natui<.. Reynolds cross-examined lengthily, contended that Eysnar’s scheme was not. Hovel, as in 1892 he forwarded to the. (Board n plan which contained the essential principle adopted by Lysnar. (Jerald Fit/.gerald, civil engineer of Wellington, testified he had examine*!, the various plans and reports had not been able to discover anything novel jn harbour construction in Lysnar’s plan. It would not he possible for anyone to proceed with harbour construction on the material provided by Bvsnar. The case is proceeding.
