TAX ON BRITISH FILMS.

NEW YORK; Jan. 2. Representatives of the National Association of the Motion Picture Industrv of America protested to the Finance Committee of the Senate yesterday against the 30 per cent duty on imported films proposed by the Fordney Tariff Bill. Tt was pointed out that American films did not need protection and that onlv a few foreign films had ever been successful in this country. Producers also feared that the proposed duty would cause retaliation abroad against United States films. Several prominent film, companies supported the Motion Picture Association’s protest on the ground that the shutting out of foreign films would confer a practical monopoly in the supply of raw film on one company to the detriment of the industry as a whole. Representatives of the Actors’ Equity Association urged the committee to double the proposed 30 per cent tax in order to protect American film players. an—m—r"
