Delivery of Milk.

WELLINGTON COUNCIL'S

DECISION

WELLINGTON, March 17

At last night’s meeting of the City Council the milk committee recommended that tiie necessary authority be granted to the committee to proceed with the delivery of milk in bottles as from July Bth, 1922. The estimated cost of providing the necessary plant and equipment and the structural ’alterations to the present premises is £21,600. Councillor Norwood, chairman of the milk committee, said he concluded on overwhelming evidence that there was only one way of distributing milk and that was in bottles. He said that when nil accounts f were piaid lit the end of the month they would have a cash, balance of £2i,500. Their own loan was £52,000, so that their fixed assets were £30,500, represented in the milk station in Dixon Street and its ramifications and the country stations. No tenders had been received for the distribution of milk, so they must take on the work of distribution themselves. The extra expense of bottling the milk would be met by tiie adoption of Hie coupon system. Councillor Forsyth said lie thought that the £21,000 would probably be absorbed when the existing liabilities were met and paid, and lie moved that the report be referred back. Councillor Burns seconded the amendment as, lie said, the scheme would be too much of .a financial, strain on the city. Tie said that Lhe astounding thing in the report was that bottles Here to be bought in America when English bottles had been quoted cheaper. Councillor Norwood explained that the American price was here and the English price f.o.b. in England. Councillor Chapman supported the report. He said tiie system assure 1 purity and full measure. The Mayor said the council had been positively driven info establishing a municipal milk scheme as the milk producers were dissatisfied with the vendors, so the council found it necessary- to go on. The council was committed to the' scheme and must move forward. The scheme was being watched with interest by conn tries overseas

After discussion the amendment was lost and the motion to adopt the report was carried- , , , •
