A DISASTROUS FIRE. WELLINGTON, March 20

A disastrous fire occurred at Porirua at a.n) early hour this morning which originated in a building used as a. store and dwelling, and occupied by Thomas Dick. It spread on both sides causing considerable damage. Dick, with his wife and family was away a,t the time. Tlie alarm was given by residents who turned out in large numbers. Waiter was obtained from a. creek nearby, ’but the fire spread to the bakehouse and tea-room on one side and a. bootmaker’s shop/ and dwelling on the other. The fire fighters concentrated thenefforts on saving the adjoining build-, lives and tlm Porirua Hotel across the road. It was only through their efforts that the hotel and stables alongside were saved. The store and bakehouse owned by Airs Benson, of Titnhi Bay. Hall, the bootmaker’s shop and dwelling, all of which were totally destroyed were own ed by Airs Dughty. The hotel, which was badly scorched is the property of the Sullivan Estate. Insurances amounted to about £ISOO. The telegraph wires weire burnt through and for eight hours AVellington was cut off from Wanganui, Palmerston North and Auckland.
