MYSTERY PEARLS.
NEW YORK, Jan. 13. A pearl necklace, said to lie of fabulous value ami of mysterious origin, figures in ail action brought against Messrs Cartier, the iewcDers, by Messr* Benguiat, importers of antiques. The latter, it was stated, sold the necklace to Messrs Cartier for 1125,000 under an agreement providing that tlrcy should receive a share of whatever amount in excess of that sum Messrs Cartier obtained for the necklace. Messrs Cartier found a purciiascr -ind reported the price to Bcnguiats as £206,250. The latter claim that the sum actually realised was C 375.000.
The necklace is composed of 359 pearls in live raws, of a total weight of 4,005 grains, fastened by a clasp containing a miniature of Catharine Empress or Russia. Both Messrs Cartier anil Messrs Benguiat refuse i<> name iic purchaser, and they state that the ioimer owner of the necklace declines to reveal how it came to the Unite.i States. It is denied, however, that i was part of the former Russian C rown jewels.
