STAFFORD NEWS.

(Our own Correspondent.;

Although there was a drenching rain on Tuesday afternoon and evening, j there was a goodly attendance at the i social and dance to Air and Airs George Linklaber. Friends and acquaintances were present from as far north as Aliaura and Greymouth, and south from Hokitika and Waitaha. The music for the dances and songs was supplied hv Airs Stewart (piano), .Mr F. AJartini (cornet), and .Mr Phil Griffin (violin), ably assisted at inteivals by Aliases Larcombe, Brown and Al. Morgan. Air R. Hobbits, with his usual kindness and ability, acted as AI.C., Air B. Turner giving him a spell at times. No wonder that this lovely music and conducting ol the dances proved such a great incentive to lovers of the light fantastic to fully enjoy its excellence. At 11 o’clock, Mr Sandle on behalf of the people of the district, presented Mr Linklater with a beautiful case ol pipes, wishing him enjoyable smokes from tlfcni, and to Airs Linklatei a nice present of another description, heartily wishing them and their family long life, happiness and prosperity. Air B. Lyons and Air F. Alartini also spoke referring to the love, esteem and affection felt for them by everyone, arid regret that they were leaving Stafford, but trusting that their residence at Hokitika, would be all they could

desire. During the intervals between dances several ladies and gentlemen gave songs and Recitations. I am very sorry that I don’t know the names of all of them, and therefore think it best not to mention the names of any, and I trust they will forgive me for the unintentional omission. The refreshments Were all that could he desired. The ladies of Gohlsborougn and Stafford supplied an abundance ol delicacies, which with ham and tongue sandwiches, were greatly appieeiabed. Alter midnight Mr Sandle sincerely thanked the musicians, AI.C., Mr AV. Blackmail for the loan of his piano, and all who had eontrihilled to the grand success of tlu* evening. Dancing etc. were continued until alter 2 o’clock, thus ending one of the most enjoyable socials ever held in Stafford.

On Monday evening Mr Sandle sustained a painful accident by slipping and badly spraining the muscles of his leg and hip. lie is still lame, hut able to attend to his duties.
