Zambukka Murder

During the afternoon session of the trial of Rutenc Topi fo r the murder of Znmbukka, at Motn River, early in the afternoon of November 4th, evidence was given by Charlotte Cooper, housekeeper at Saxby’s. She deposed that accused was there between four and five in the afternoon. When questioned, he said he had bought nil nxe handle and cigarettes. His brother'"" Pecti was there on the 10th, and he overheard a telephone conversation from the police at Opotiki, which referred to a No (5 cartridge. Peeti told her “My cartridges are number five.”
Victoria Milner, residing next to Omaio. stated that in November last she had been engaged to the accused, and they were to have been married that month. The accused paid her a visit on November sth.
To counsel for the accused; She came from the East Coast, but did not know if Zanibukka. had a reputation there for gambling, nor that he had been mixed up in a row with another Asiatic.
GISBORNE, March 17. The murde r trial was continued evidence was given by James Mansell, telegraph linesman, as to the natives who were on the road about the time off the murder; by Tenimu Kopu as to the purchase of goods from Zambukka; by Harieta TangMre as to s'’e. ling a bundle o£ notes In deceased's possession, and by Tuhoromona as to the search for Znmbukka and the find ing of the packs. He was present at the arrest when the accused Rutenc asked him to see Wclio Brown and tell her to say what she said to him. Witness added that about three weeks ago lie was on the road from Saxby’s to Marenui. He saw fungus on a tree stump and on going to a gutter, he saw a shirt underneath a log and identified it as a shirt which Rutenc owned. It was a very uncommon shirt, the only one of the description in the locality. The shirt had some bluish black spots on the front and sleeves. These spots were not part of the pattern, hilt were foreign to the shirt. Hp put the shirt hack under tho log,
