There was quite an interested gathering in Hamilton 'Street at noon to-day where Mr W. Searle’s motor lorry stood prior to returning to Hai'i Hari. The lorry was loaded with D. McLeflh Ltd. show stock, comprising a stallion, bull, and pigs, which were being taken back to Herepo. The lorry load emphasised tlio importance of the motor lorry traffic that will take place on South Westland roads when all the bridges are completed.
At the Wardens’ Court this morning, Mr Murdoch in referring to an application for protection of a sawmill area near Kmnara, stated thd coni** pletion of the application was a record for the Court. The application came up for hearing at last Court and was adjourned for the consent of the Ministei of -Mines. Taking advantage of the visit of the Minister of Mines the application had been put before him ami approved, and now came before the Court for confirmation. He desired to commend the officers of the Court in the promptitude they had shown in carrying the business through.
It is recorded that one day last week there were 400 applicants for the right to rent a five-roomed house tvhicli wag advertised to be let in Wellington (says the “Post”). It is clear, therefore, that the housing shortage continue. Some attempt to overcome the shortage has been made in the direction of converting existing buildings into flats. A start lias now been made at Oriental Bay with the construction of a new type of building, which will probably become more common as the city grows. As the ground is limited, the present scheme is not a big one, Foul- houses will be built, one above the other, and each will he entered from an inside stair common to all. The structure will be reinforced concrete, and will have garages on the ground floor. Each flat will contain a large drawing-room overlooking the harbour, with folding doors into a small dining-room, the combined length being over thirty feet. A large sleeping balcony, also over-looking the harbour, two bedrooms, kitchen and bath room will, with wardrobes cupboards and all conveniences complete in each case what ought to be a comfortable home. A feature will be the absence of chimneys and coal fireS: Cooking, heating and iigliting will be provided for by up-to-date well regulated gas fires and electricity.
