MUTTON AND LAMB.

MINISTER ON REDUCED C.I.F. PRICES.

WELLINGTON, March 13.

The Minister of Agriculture says the present reduced c.i.f. offers for New Zealand mutton gnd lamb are stated to be due to expected heavy arrivals in tlie United Kingdom in March and April, The statistical position does not justify these statements, in view of the fact that tlie High Commissioner’s cablegram of March 11th states that stocks of old season’s meat are small and new season’s is in short supply. There would appear to be no reason to anticipate a reduction on the London market. The arrivals of New Zealand meat, on the London market this season, and the anticipated arrivals to the end of April, are as follows:: Beef, Mutton, Lamb, Month. Qrs. Carcases. Carcases. January ... 36,546 53,854 28,108 February ... 10,458 84,329 161,960 March ... 17,219 402,001 687,795 April ... 13.570 225,634 324,646 A comparison of the shipments of meat from New Zealand in the 1920-21 and 1921-22 seasons, in 601 b freight carcases, is as follows:

Total 1,787,811 Balance in store in New Zealand on February 28th, 1922, 1,739,271. It is significant that the prices quoted for new season’s meat in the United Kingdom immediately after the removal of Government control on March 3lst, 1921, were: Light-weight mutton, Sifd to 9d; heavy-weight mutton, 7}d to B|d; light-weight lamb, 12d to 13d. To-day’s prices quoted by the High Commissioner are; Light-weight mutton. 7UI to 8(1; heavy-weight mutton, tfj-d to 7d ; North Island lamb, to 1 i ; ]d; no Canterbury on the market. In view of thie certainty of a reduced export, for the season, and provided there is no manipulation of the market in tlie interests of individuals, New Zealand producers should Ik l assured of a reasonable return for all mutton and lamb shipped during.the season.

1920November, 1920 ... 829,113 December, 1920 ... 1,293,012 January, 1921 ... 488,420 February, 1921 ... 287,636 Total ... ... 2,898,181 Balance in store in New Zealand on February 28th, 1921, 3,355,407. 1921November, 1921 ... 240,336 • December, 1921 ... 184,152 January, 1922 ... 629,743 February, 1922 ... 733,580
