The iionvestoriy weather of the past few clays has further disintegrated the hull of the wrecked steamer Perth at the Creymouth north tip head. Yesterday the mast which lias withstood the elements for over 16 weeks, came to and the split in the hull towards the stern opened up further, there bein'; such a break as to rentier the boilers visible at low tide. A"s had l eer) expected despite the vessel’s stout build, the winter nor-westerly seas will shortly demolish the wreck of the Perth completely.—Argus.
The death occurred at his brother’s residence Blackwater. on Sunday, of Aid Alexander Doig, a very old resident of the Grey Valley. He was on the Victorian Goldfields, arriving there in 1885. and worked at his trade as a carpenter here. He came to New Zealand, arriving in Hokitika in 1865, being wrecked on the Hokitika, bar. He worked on most of the AVest Coast fields, being particularly well-known at H'alf Ounce, Noble’s and all the Grey Valley rushes, For some time past Mr Doig had been in failing health and passed away at the age of 88 years. Deceased, who was unmarried, was a native of Scotland.
The Opera House has been hooked for n four day and night season of Chautauqua, commencing next Tuesday afternoon. The daily programmes are •if a superior class, introducing the h''st talent in vocal and instrumental numbers, and lecturers of a superior standard. On the opening day the Fine Arts trio will appear, introducing .Miss Spauswick, who was soprano soloist with Verbruggen’s orchestra, Miss Dolly Stewart, a charming society entertainer, and Mr Norman Pearce in dramatic sketches. In the afternoon > lie will deliver a humorous lecture oil “Getting There.” The lecturer at night on the topical subject of “Ptmbblems of the Pacific,” will be Private Peat of book fame.
Holy Trinity Church, Grey mouth, was the scene of a pretty wedding yesterday morning, when Mr Hetiry Holder of the local Railway Department, eldest son of Mr and Mrs Holder, of the Criterion Hotel, Westport, was married fo Miss .Tean Johnson, the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs W. J. Johnson of Arney Street, Grey mouth. Archdeacon Carr officiated. The bride,, who was given away by her father, -looked charming in a smart navy-braided coat frock and pink lacO'peas and asters. The bridesmaid, Miss Amy Johnson (sister of the bride) wore a brown jersey coat frock, and a jade green and brown hat. The duties of best man were carried out by Mr AT. Johnson. After the ceremony the party were entertained at the residence of the bride’s parents. Mr and Airs Holder left by the Otira express and were fa rewelled at the railway station by a large number of friends. The honeymoon is to be spent in Christchurch, after which Mr and Airs Holder will reside at Grejy mouth.
