JOHN ARBUCKLE
CHARGE OF EMBEZZLING £459,

WELLINGTON, March 8,
John Arbuckle, until recently Secretary of the New Zealand Miners’ Federation, stood a preliminary trial- on a charge of having embezzled £459, the property of the Coal, Gold, shale, and Quarry Workers. It was stated : accused was arrested at Sydney. Peter o,’(Rourke, Secretary and Treasurer of the New Zealand Miners’ Federation, said that when he took over the accused was asked by him how things were. He said: “Everything is all right.” No moneys were handed witness, all having been banked. Regarding various levies made on rafflUiated unions foil assistance to miners, one was made for the Broken Hill miners on strike. After the accused’s departure, various discrepancies were discovered. Arbuckle bad previously been asked about a missing £SO. He said he’d be back in three weeks from Australia, but he did not return and was therefore arrested.
