EXPLOSION DISASTER
MUNITION GIRL VICTIMS. AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CAULK ASSOCIATION LONDON, March 6. A munitions explosion at Port Upton, in ,Staffordshire, killed five and injured 30 girls. The girls were engaged in removing the contents of 160 tons of cartridges. The explosion occurred while the contents were being put into separate receptacles. It blew off the roof of the building. The whole fifty girls were in the room when it occurred, and all were blackened beyond recognition. All the clothing of ninny of them was torn off their bodies. The hair was burned off others. In the explosion the death roll is ten. While the cartridges were being torn to pieces the factory floor was strewn with gunpowder. When the explosion occurred tne girls were trapped in a blazing inferno. Some of the injured ones rushed into the streets naked, shrieking in agony. Passers-by covered them with sack.
The injured girls were afterwards taken in lorries to the hospital, where it became necessary to discharge some convalescent patients to make room ior them.
